Everybody enjoys seeing glimpses of long-forgotten historical events and guessing about what life would have been like in some illustrious bygone eras. IBM Engineer, 1949
Take a look at this mess! With its huge, complex arrangement of wires and tubes, this computer appears to be malfunctioning or to have become broken. But, as unlikely as that may seem, this is how the original computers appeared, long before transistors were invented in the 1950s.
In this image from 1949, an IBM engineer can be seen navigating the numerous connections and switches while working on one of the earliest computers. Fifty engineers were required to operate these computers due to their complexity!
