Susan’s Insecurity
Even before getting her bachelor’s degree from Harvard, Susan knew she wanted to be a doctor. At her graduation, her professors, although proud and congratulatory, still had their doubts about Susan. They told her she should study general medicine and become a physician.
But this wasn’t good enough for Susan, who refused to listen. Her dream was to be a surgeon, but not just any surgeon—a brain surgeon. Susan buckled down and followed her ambition by getting right into the swing of medical school. Before long, she achieved her goal—she went on to become one of the most respected brain surgeons in the country. Though her go-getter attitude got her far in life, Susan was insecure about one big thing.
Susan’s Resolution
Throughout all her time getting her degrees and studying advanced medicine, there was one test she never seemed to be able to pass: her driver’s test. Since Susan spent all her time pursuing her career, she always put learning how to drive on the back burner.
No matter how much driver theory she studied and how many written tests she took, Susan failed her road test over and over. She felt hopeless. How could such a successful woman not be able to develop such a basic skill? But her desire to achieve was her driving force—Susan refused to give up.
Dream Car
The one thing that kept Susan going was the dream of owning a car. Ever since starting medical school, she fantasized about owning a luxurious Audi Q8. She wanted to feel the breeze flowing through her hair as she drove the car down the highway.
After countless trials and failures, Susan stepped into the DMV—ready to take her driver’s test—more motivated than ever. Her boyfriend had been teaching her the ways of the road since she got her driver’s permit. Despite being more ready than ever, doubt crept into Susan’s mind the moment she got behind the wheel.
The Car Dealership
Susan hushed the voice of doubt in her head and confidently took the wheel for her driver’s test. To her surprise, she ended up acing the test with flying colors! Susan felt exhilarated—she was one step closer to driving her dream car.
With her newly printed driver’s license in hand, Susan made her way to the car dealership that very day. Feeling unstoppable, she stormed into the dealership with excitement. Little did she know what awaited her behind those doors.
Meeting the Car Salesman
Susan winded her way through the pristine showroom, inspecting every detail of the sleek cars on display. But Susan didn’t notice that from the moment she entered the dealership, the head car salesman Jerry was sizing her up.
Jerry approached Susan as she browsed the vehicles. “Are you sure you can afford something like this, sweetheart?” Jerry asked, oozing with condescension. Susan was taken aback by Jerry’s greeting, her cheeks burning red with embarrassment. She tried her best not to let Jerry’s smug attitude get the better of her.
Susan’s Embarrassment
She assured Jerry that she had been saving up. “I’m looking to buy a Q8,” Susan said confidently. “Well, I’ve got something even better for you. Come with me,” Jerry said, smirking. Jerry made his way to the back of the showroom and Susan followed.
There stood a rusty, old SUV. “Here’s a great deal for you!” Jerry said, pointing at the beat-up vehicle. “No, this isn’t what I wanted,” exclaimed Susan, horrified. “I demand to see your manager!” she went on.
Demanding the Manager
“The manager is busy,” Jerry insisted as he tried to mask the smug look on his face. Susan could sense that Jerry the salesman wasn’t being candid and this made her livid. She felt humiliated. Did she really get this far just to be treated so disrespectfully by a car salesman?
“I already told you, I want to purchase an Audi Q8. I don’t like your attitude, so if you’re not going to let me speak with the manager, I will just leave and take my business elsewhere,” she said, looking him straight in the eye. But Jerry didn’t waver. “I’m sorry, ma’am. The manager isn’t available right now,” he responded.
Jerry’s Excuse
“Is this how you treat your customers?” Susan asked, fed up by Jerry’s reluctance. “I’m sorry you’re upset, but you can’t speak to the manager today. I can answer any questions you have,” Jerry answered.
“Great. Do you have a Premium Q8?” Susan retorted. “Yes, but this car is very high-end. Our showroom is fully stocked with plenty of affordable cars,” Jerry said while shaking his head. “I’ve done my research and I know what car I want,” she exclaimed, feeling discouraged. As Susan made for the exit, her attention was captured by a loud commotion coming from the manager’s office.
The Commotion
Susan’s humiliation dissipated as a loud screech of agony came from the manager’s office. She stopped in her tracks, completely forgetting about the interaction with Jerry that had left her mortified just moments before.
Jerry and everyone else in the car dealership were also fixated on the noise coming from the office. As everyone stood in complete silence for a few minutes, a pit of despair grew in Susan’s stomach. Then the door of the manager’s office swung open.
Tearful Manager
From the office emerged a burly-suited man who was emotional, his face covered with tears. He had on a white shirt and tie, which were soaked from intense crying. With a phone in his hand, the manager scanned the room and locked eyes with Jerry.
His face was pale as a ghost as he walked briskly toward Jerry, who was standing in the corner of the dealership. The whole atmosphere of the room changed as the manager began exchanging words with Jerry.
Holding Back Tears
Thomas, the manager, held back tears while he tried to explain the terrible news he had just heard. “What’s wrong Thomas?” Jerry asked as the smug smile on his face turned into an anxious look.
“I can’t believe what I just heard, Jerry,” Thomas began, trying to catch his breath. “It’s about your wife Grace. Something has happened to her! Deaconess Hospital just called me,” Thomas explained.
Breaking the News
“They said Grace had been in a terrible accident. A car accident,” he continued. Jerry’s eyes widened. “That’s it? What else did they say?” Jerry asked. “They said she’s unconscious. She hit her head hard. This is serious, Jerry!” Thomas replied.
Jerry put his head in his hands and Thomas continued to explain. “They’ve figured she had a serious head injury. They said she might not make it,” Thomas went on.
Serious Accident
“They’re going to start operating on her soon, but they’re asking us to come in to say our goodbyes. I lost my sister, Jerry! She’s gone!” Thomas screeched, overcome by a wave of weeping.
“She’s my wife, Thomas, We’re going to get through this together. We’re going to be there for her,” Jerry replied. Susan couldn’t help but listen to the conversation as it unfolded before her eyes. Was there something she could do to help?
Internal Conflict
Susan couldn’t help but wonder if she should offer her skills to this man who had humiliated her just moments before. Could this be an opportunity to show that she was the bigger person? But the way Jerry treated her was still fresh in her mind.
His words had landed heavy blows to her pride and caused her to question her self-worth. Her heart was wrestling with her mind on what the right thing to do was.
Her Responsibility
Susan found herself thinking about the person she had become—a well-respected brain surgeon whose job was to save lives. While she felt a responsibility to assist in any way she could, she was torn if she wanted to get involved.
She knew she had the power to make a difference in this woman’s prognosis and despite her resentment towards Jerry, his wife’s life was hanging by a thread. Would she follow her heart or her mind?
Accomplished Doctor
As a brain surgeon, Susan was no stranger to life-and-death situations. She had performed tons of surgeries like this before, but still, this one felt completely different from all the others. She had never felt such a personal connection to the victim.
Time was of the essence, and with every second she hesitated, Jerry’s wife’s life was in danger. Susan knew she needed to act quickly. Suddenly, she was overwhelmed by an intense sense of vulnerability.
Weighing Her Options
While her professional instincts were telling her to step in and help, her heart was still nursing the blows dealt by Jerry’s hurtful words. The choice wasn’t easy.
Should she go against her feelings and help a woman whose husband treated her badly? Or should she let the situation play out, knowing that the hospital was equipped to handle such cases without her intervention? What Susan said next shocked everyone.
Making the Decision
Taking a deep breath, Susan announced that she was a brain surgeon. “My hospital is handling Grace’s case, but Grace’s chance of survival will be better if I’m there,” Susan said reluctantly.
The two men fell silent as the words left her mouth. The eyes of the sobbing dealership manager and the stunned Jerry bored into hers as they grappled with the huge revelation. But would they allow Susan to help?
Getting Involved
Caught off guard, Jerry and Thomas agreed to bring Susan to the hospital and assist with Grace’s treatment. They both agreed that Susan’s expertise would flip the odds for Grace’s survival in the terrible car accident.
With a nod, Susan led the men toward the exit of the dealership. There was no time to waste, every second counted when dealing with traumatic brain injuries. The trio headed to the hospital, determined to do their best to save Grace.
Assessing the Damage
Upon arriving at the hospital, they wasted no time. As they walked through the halls, the severity of the situation began to set in. Susan got a full medical rundown from the attending doctors. Grace was in a critical condition.
Her medical charts painted a grim picture: a serious head trauma resulting from the crash. Each moment that passed decreased the chances of saving her. It was clear that Susan was the best hope for Grace, but was it too late?
Preparing for Surgery
Susan knew that time was of the essence. She scrubbed in and prepared herself for the strenuous procedure. She was about to undertake one of the most challenging surgeries of her career. It was a race against the clock.
Meanwhile, Jerry and Thomas found themselves saying potential last words to Grace, praying she would pull through. Watching Susan walking toward the operating room was a glimmer of hope amid their heart-wrenching uncertainty. Grace’s life was now in Susan’s hands.
Suiting Up
As Susan changed into her surgical gown and gloves, a wave of quiet focus washed over her. This was where she excelled, where she made a difference in the lives of patients and their families.
As she entered the operating room, the sterile smell of the hospital surrounded her. The familiar hum of machines and the whir of overhead lights grounded her. Not knowing what to expect, she steeled herself for the grueling hours that lay ahead. Would she be able to save Grace?
Race Against Time
Time seemed to stretch within the sterile confines of the operating room. Susan was on her feet for 12 straight hours, performing one of the most intricate operations of her career. Every minute was crucial, every second counted. Grace’s life hung in the balance.
But despite all odds, the surgery was successful. The injury was severe, but Susan managed to stabilize Grace. Yet, it was too early to celebrate—the question of whether Grace would wake up from the anesthesia loomed over everyone like a dark cloud.
Saving Grace
The waiting was agonizing. Jerry and Thomas paced nervously, their hearts heavy with fear. Suddenly, the operating room doors swung open, and out walked Susan, her face pale, but her eyes filled with hope. Against all odds, she told them Grace survived the operation.
Susan’s skillful hands had saved her life. But even though she was stable, her recovery was far from certain. She still had a long road ahead, filled with many challenges.
Jerry’s Gratitude
Jerry and Thomas were ecstatic to hear that Grace was alive. They turned to Susan with tears in their eyes. “How can we ever repay you?” Jerry stammered, overcome with gratitude. Susan just smiled and gently replied that she wanted nothing in return.
“I only ask of you one thing. You must treat everyone with humility and respect,” she told Jerry. “Let’s go back to the dealership. I’ll have that paperwork for the Audi Q8 ready for you,” Jerry said, realizing his earlier arrogance.
Susan’s Dream Car
When Susan returned to the dealership, Jerry made good on his promise. He gave her an unbeatable deal on the Audi Q8. As she drove her dream car off the dealership lot, she felt a mixture of elation and exhaustion.
With the wind blowing in her hair, she couldn’t help but smile. She had managed to not only get her dream car, but also save a life in the process—all in one day! But there was another surprise around the corner for Susan.
Fresh Start
Days turned into weeks and weeks into months and Grace made a slow but steady recovery, much to the relief of Jerry and Thomas. They ended up throwing a small party in Susan’s honor to express their gratitude.
As they celebrated Grace’s recovery and Susan’s courage and skill, the unpleasant experience at the dealership became a distant memory. From the tumultuous day, a unique friendship had formed between Jerry, Thomas, Grace, and Susan.
Looking to the Future
After overcoming her struggle to learn how to drive, Susan never expected a car salesman to stand in the way of her and her dream car. In a twist of fate, Susan used her surgical prowess to save Jerry’s wife and he ended up giving her a great deal on the car of her dreams.
We hope Susan is enjoying her Audi Q8 and we hope she continues to make many more positive memories with her new friends. We wish her nothing but the best in her illustrious career.
