Fired Up: This Engineer’s Revenge Will Blow Your Mind

Career Goals

Alex set his sights on becoming an engineer, spurred by a wish to give back to the country that sheltered his kin. Books became his allies, and his efforts led to a chance to study at MIT at just 17 years.

The top honour, valedictorian, was bestowed upon him in 1980. Completed studies rebooted his drive. Yet, being a Russian in America was proving difficult, leading to a rising feeling of disappointment.

Discrimination

In the early ’80s, Alex found it tough to land a job. He had a Slavic accent. People would often just say goodbye and hang up the phone or shut the door. This time was known as the New Cold War. Lots of people are scared or mad at strangers. Alex was a clever engineer. But people didn’t like him because of where he came from.

So, he fixed radios for a small paycheck. It was tough, but he was a fighter. He liked going to Matryoshka. The folks there knew him well. They are always kind. They would serve him a hot bowl of borscht, even when he had no money.

Dream Job

When the USSR split, things got better for Alex. One day, he was fixing a radio that belonged to a boss’s wife, and he amazed the man with his skills. The CEO advised Alex to apply for an open job in the firm. In his interview, Alex’s deep knowledge, clever solutions, and close attention to tiny details impressed all.

He landed the job and climbed the ladder to become a chief engineer over time. Alex became famous in the whole country for his incredible engineering skills.

Feeling His Age

Alex, now 63, was the head of a family and sadly lost his wife to a swift brain disease when he was 60. The toll of age started to show. His job did help him ignore his sadness.

However, Alex knew that he wasn’t as bright as he used to be. With tech developing so quickly these days, it was tough for him to keep up. He noticed his company changing a lot, and he wished to adapt to it.

New CEO

The CEO, the offspring of the past CEO who hired Alex, announced one day he was leaving. The firm swiftly assigned a new CEO. There was strong hope that this new leader could introduce big changes and help the firm keep up with current trends.

This new boss came from a tech company in Silicon Valley. He didn’t go for usual business suits but wore pricey sports clothes and even had a small basketball hoop in his workspace. He liked talking about “synergy” and “blue sky thinking” and favored voicemail over email. Alex found this style puzzling. He was unsure about what the future had in store.

Meeting With HR

The new CEO stepped in. Soon after, HR gave Alex a shout. They wanted to chat. This was new ground for him. What was it about? Could someone have complained? He got along well with his team; this seemed doubtful.

A brief unease squeezed Alex as he headed to meet with the fresh HR boss. He wasn’t optimistic about a pay rise. As things played out, his hunch was spot on.

Checking In

A knock on the door was met with a sweet reply, “Come in.” A young lady named Vivian sat behind the desk. She was youthful and neat, even down to her fingers. When she saw Alex, she beamed, showing off her white teeth.

“Sit down, Al,” she said. Alex frowned at the short version of his name. She continued, “I wanted to chat about your adjustment to these shifts. I get it’s hard, especially for someone with your background. But, remember, this company keeps developing. Spotting and fixing small weak spots is my job.” Alex remained uncertain about the direction of this conversation.

First Warning

Vivian brought a matter to our attention, and we must ensure it doesn’t happen again. I want to ensure we are all in agreement. Someone has observed that you’ve been allowing unauthorized individuals to enter the building, and this is something we cannot tolerate. Can we agree on that?” Vivian stated. Alex was taken aback, wondering what she meant.

Then it dawned on him – the previous week, he had courteously held the door open for a group of visiting engineers from Germany who were attending a conference. He found it hard to believe that he was being reprimanded for what he considered a simple act of kindness. However, he had a gut feeling that there was more to this meeting than met the eye.

Forced Out

Vivian adopted an overly cheerful tone as she said, “Consider this a one-time warning, alright? We don’t want to see you go. You’re welcome to get back to your work now.” Alex found it difficult to accept being addressed in such a manner, especially since he held a senior position within the organization. However, he began to piece together the situation.

It became evident that this was just one stage in a process that would eventually lead to his departure. Other senior engineers had inexplicably chosen early retirement, and he could only surmise that they, too, had encountered similar interactions with Vivian. Alex felt utterly demoralized.

Despair

Alex trudged back to his desk, eyes passing over the familiar corners. He gave 25 years to this place, always backing up the company’s goals. Yet, they wanted him gone, and they didn’t even say thank you.

Later, Alex didn’t stop at Matryoshka, his usual place. He went right home. Avoiding everyone was his plan because he didn’t want to share his feelings. After years of effort and loyalty, he felt he deserved more. His vision of retirement was not clear yet.

Something Changed

When Alex awoke the following morning, he experienced an immense burden weighing down on his chest. Summoning the energy to rise from his bed was a formidable task. However, a text message from his grandson changed everything. The message read: ‘Hello, Dedushka. We need someone with an amazing job to speak at our school next week. Do you have the courage to come?

No other kids will have someone with as many remarkable achievements as you. I’m eagerly looking forward to our weekend chess match! Andrey xxx.’ Tears welled up in Alex’s eyes, and an enthusiasm ignited within him. He definitely did an extraordinary job, with an amazing history of loyalty and hard work, with a quarter of a century witnessing his greatness. Now, he had determined not to quit without the fight.

Hatching a Plan

Alex sat at work the next day, thinking hard. His beloved workspace had changed. Alex wasn’t happy about being treated badly. He wanted to make them sorry. He wasn’t sure how to do it. He was smart, and he knew many ways to upset the new boss.

He wanted to show how important he was and why we need experts. By the end of the day, he had a perfect plan. Now, he just had to do it.

Working Overtime

For the next two weeks, Alex worked hard. He stayed at his job longer each day. Even though he was tired when he got home, he was happy. He felt sure he was doing the right thing. He was excited about what was going to happen. His coworkers in engineering noticed a change in him.

Alex just smiled a kind of funny smile. He told them they would understand soon. They thought he was trying hard to keep his job. But they did not know what was really going on.

Resignation Day

Today was the day. Alex readied his resignation letter. He wore fancy clothes and brought Russian treats to the office. Going to Vivian’s office, purposefully, he knocked. While she talked to a friend about a film, he entered.

Annoyed, she barely looked at him. He put the letter on her desk. Soon, she’ll see what happens when you don’t value a skilled engineer.

Frantic Phone Call

Alex swiftly collected his belongings and exited the office. With a surplus of accrued holiday days at his disposal, there was no necessity for him to remain and fulfill the standard two-week notice period. He was finished. As he made his way down the street, his phone began to vibrate persistently. It was Vivian, her tone filled with urgency.

“Mr. Ivanov, what have you accomplished? Return immediately and rectify it! Alex, please! You can’t abandon us in this state. You have an obligation to the company,” she implored.

Not My Job

“Sorry, Vivian, it’s not my job now, and I owe no more to the business. Find your own fix. Good luck,” he said coolly, then hung up. Vivian was yelling at a dead phone line. Alex could almost sense the chaos back at work. For the first time in months, a wave of relief washed over him. He felt a fresh bounce in his tread.

On that cool fall day, Alex chose a calm walk in Central Park. His old firm was about to understand just how big a mistake they made pushing him away.

Using His Skills

For two busy weeks, Alex worked overtime. His goal? To make sure the business wouldn’t last long after he left. As chief engineer, he knew more than the new tech-loving boss ever dreamed of.

He used these talents, knowing nobody else had the skill to repair the company if he walked out. He couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

Making Changes

With careful planning, Alex had changed each of his original designs for bridges, buildings, and other works. These small changes were hardly noticeable, but a trained eye could spot them, and they made a big difference. Alex’s changes could either make a structure safe or lead to a disaster.

In his goodbye letter, he clearly explained what he did. But that’s not all! Alex also improved the software system in the office building. Suddenly, key cards stopped working, the Wi-Fi went out, and passwords got changed. The outcome was pure mayhem.

Only He Knew

Alex caused problems from within the business. Only he knew the exact changes he made and how to fix them, but he didn’t plan on sharing those fixes soon. Alex knew his actions were serious, but he wanted to send a message.

He wanted to show the business what happens when they choose to fire older workers despite their experience. The impact of Alex’s actions went further than he first thought.

Unexpected Impact

The company was unable to use its year-old plans and its operations were in chaos. The CEO was in real trouble. His team of young newcomers struggled to fix things.

He realized he didn’t know as much about his industry as he should. He sat alone in his office, overwhelmed. A secret he’d kept hidden came to light. He had no other choice but to admit it.

Late Night Visitor

One night, Alex heard a knock. His heart pounded. Thoughts about the law filled his head as he opened the door. But it wasn’t the cops. It was Trent, who was the new boss. He seemed upset and worried. “Alex, I’m sorry. I want you back at work. I know I’ve been hard on the old-timers. I’m sinking into my job.

I got into MIT because of my dad, not my grades. I’m lost. I can’t figure anything out. Please, friend, I need your help,” begged Trent.

Considering His Options

Alex watched the ex-CEO go from power to pitiful. He couldn’t believe that this confident guy tricked his way into the same school as him years ago. It blew his mind. Now, Alex had a decision to make. Should he leave them high and dry? Walk away with clean hands?

This didn’t really mesh with who he was. At first, he was driven by payback. But now, he saw the real hurt and pressure he’d caused. He looked at Trent and said, “Okay, I’ll help to fix this, but I’ve got some terms…”

Making Things Right

In the end, Alex came back to work for a week. This gave him enough time to fix the problems he had caused. Trent was really thankful, but Alex had a bigger idea to make the company better for everyone after he left. He got Trent to agree to a seminar about not treating older workers unfairly and to put rules in place to protect them from being fired without a good reason.

Plus, Alex pushed for better goodbye deals for people who had to quit. His goal? To gather a good chunk of money for his grandson Andrey’s college fund.

Greener Pastures

After the storm calmed, Alex decided he wasn’t ready to retire. He felt his work skills were at their best right now. The chaos he stirred up in recent times showed his impressive talents and deep wisdom.

But, one doubt lingered – Could he land a new job at 63? In his old job, many saw him as too old. Yet he was firm and eager to keep pushing on.

Interviews

Alex jumped right in, applying for top engineer jobs. In no time, he had three interviews! The first two? Not so much – they brushed him off when they saw he had grey hair. But the third one? Totally different. The company showed off a wide mix of ages and backgrounds, and Alex fit right in.

The young interviewer was super impressed with Alex’s experience and, just like that, gave him a job offer. They knew his know-how was valuable, and he could really help their team.

Finding Respect

Alex was a bit anxious on his first day. But he soon found out he didn’t need to worry. His new co-workers welcomed him like he had always been there. He was a consultant. The younger engineers saw him as a wise mentor. He helped them with their projects in a patient and organized way.

He pointed out problems they hadn’t seen because of his high skill level. Alex got the respect he deserved. Now, he was excited to go to Andrey’s school. He hoped to inspire the students about engineering.

Looking to the Future

As a kid, Alex Ivanov wanted to be an engineer. His dream became real. He gave his all and a good 25 years, to a company he thought valued him. Then, out of nowhere, he was let go. But this didn’t break Alex. He impressed them in a memorable way.

Now, he’s doing great in a new job role, guiding the younger team members to become top engineers. We hope he also finds time for piroshki at Matryoshka and chess games with his grandson.
