Back in the Salon
Carl gave Sarah permission to take the next day off from school. He brought her into the salon with her and placed her in a shiny black bib in front of the mirror. The women in the salon laughed at him when they brought him water from a special straw while Carl was thinking about his hair.
He decided to make a small crop everywhere and get rid of all the damage done by Mr. Thompson. She applied deep conditioner and hair oil, and by the end, Sarah’s head was a curly pile of short, shiny corkscrews. Looking at himself in the mirror, Carl found himself smiling shyly at his new appearance.
Rebuilding Sarah’s Confidence
Even though she liked her new look, Sarah was still in awe. It took a while, but Carl worked hard to regain Sarah’s confidence. Together, they read stories about brave and courageous girls who overcame adversity; Carl made sure to do lots of creative things outside of school to express himself.
He still struggled in class and made sure that school would help him work through the experience, so There were sessions with a counselor. But there was still much to do.
