Splitting Up
The couple separated in 1986 after six months of joint therapeutic attempts. Thompson supported Jenner’s desire to transition, but she chose to put her sons first because she had never anticipated being married to a woman. In order to accept her gender identity, Jenner started taking hormones and undergoing other physical modifications.
Thompson gave up her claim to alimony during their divorce, allowing Jenner to see Brandon and Brody. She pretended that their dad’s body was changing and kept it a secret from her sons. She found it more difficult to respond to their child’s inquiries regarding their father’s gender identity. Nobody could have foreseen the subsequent events.
