The Most Memorable and Iconic Moments in Late-Night Talk Show History

Madonna Drops the F-Bomb

Anything goes when Madonna performs late at night, and she didn’t hold back during her visit on The Late Show with David Letterman. The musician dropped the F-bomb a whopping 14 times in one interview! In fact, she broke the record for the most heavily edited late-night interview ever. We feel bad for whoever has to continue censoring her.

There were many innuendos throughout the entire exchange, and it’s unclear whether the two are in love or hatred. She even admitted to Letterman that she wasn’t there since there wasn’t a Knicks game on. Whoa.

Ariana Grande and James Corden Go to Starbucks

Can you picture yourself working at Starbucks and seeing James Corden carrying Ariana Grande when you look up from the register? That’s what actually occurred in this Carpool Karaoke video.

“Hello, I’m Ariana Grande,” the singer says to the staff, in case they were unsure of who they were serving. I have to be carried. When they saw the stars, other patrons were so shocked that they took out their phones to record the entire event. And in case you were wondering what the pop sensation drinks, the answer is—obviously—a grande soy latte. Did you really think Grande would disappoint you?

Nicole Kidman Could’ve Dated Jimmy Fallon

Nicole Kidman and Jimmy Fallon reminisced about their first date on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, proving that celebrities can have embarrassing dating stories. However, there was no way their renditions could have differed.

The actress apparently has a thing for Fallen; the two were introduced by a mutual acquaintance, and the actress mistook them for a date. Fallon learned during this interview that she was interested in him, even if he was unaware of it at the time. Having missed his opportunity to work with an Oscar-winning actress, he was visibly mortified.

Drew Barrymore Gives David Letterman a Show

Drew Barrymore displayed her wild side on the Late Show with David Letterman after being well-known as the adorable girl from E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. Things began normally enough, but after Letterman brought up the actress’s recent club visit, things swiftly took a different turn. You won’t believe what transpired after that.

When Barrymore leaped upon the host’s desk and raised her shirt, it startled everyone. Even though Courtney Love attempted to mimic it in a later interview, it fell short of Barrymore’s famous performance.

Tom Hanks Whale Watching Prank

On late-night shows, patrons dress to impress. We’re guessing that Tom Hanks, wearing one of his finest suits, had no idea that he would be entering a waterpark. He was talking about his whale watching experiences when he got what was likely his closest contact with the animal to date.

One of the whales emerged from the water, causing a loud splash and drenching Hanks with water while he was appreciating the whale scene behind him. Conan, of course, remained quite dry. Fortunately, the actor took it very well and even added a personal touch by throwing his water mug across his face.

Harrison Ford vs. Chewbacca

Due to his reputation for being a bit grumpy, particularly during interviews, Jimmy Kimmel asked the actor if he was comfortable answering questions from the public. He said that he was as long as the questions had nothing to do with Star Wars.

Kimmel took advantage of this by dressing up audience members as movie characters. Among them was Chewbacca, who enraged Ford with his characteristic grunts. Kimmel is then questioned by the actor, “How did he get in here?” Ford and Chewbacca appear to be involved in some unresolved conflict that revolves around Ford’s wife. Before he gets up and leaves the stage, the actor begged Kimmel to declare his side. Speak of a way out.

Conan O’Brien Gets Back at NBC for Taking “The Tonight Show”

Conan O’Brien was handed The Tonight Show when Jay Leno made a comeback, but the network opted to give Leno the show back after Leno said he was done with retirement. Conan took it seriously, which makes sense, and he exacted the ultimate retribution by blowing a large portion of the networks’ budget.

Among his extravagant acquisitions was the world’s most costly vehicle, a Bugatti Veyron, which he customized to resemble a mouse. The original master recording of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” which is “crazy expensive to play on the air,” served as the vehicle’s theme music. The host revealed that the comedic segment cost an incredible $1.5 million in total!

Joaquin Phoenix Bombs While in Character for “I’m Still Here”

When David Letterman remarked Joaquin Phoenix had a different look, he was absolutely correct. Phoenix and Casey Affleck reportedly staged the appearance as a stunt for the movie I’m Still Here.  Letterman didn’t hold back when he asked the actor about his experience with the Unabomber and made fun of him for chewing gum during the conversation.

The host even said, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight,” to sum up the entire interview. The star has since expressed regret for his strange actions, and their relationship has improved.

Adele’s Carpool Karaoke

On his Carpool Karaoke segment, James Corden has welcomed a number of well-known guests, including Justin Bieber, Sia, Lady Gaga, Elton John, and Mariah Carey. But Adele would be our choice if we had to choose a favorite. Using the opening line from her song Hello, “Hello, it’s me,” Corden opened the segment. After all these years, is it still possible for us to meet?

But Adele’s incredible voice wasn’t the only thing that made the Carpool Karaoke unforgettable. Her vivacious personality also came through. Even though Adele’s renditions of “Someone Like You” and “All I Ask” were fantastic, Adele’s flawless freestyle rap at the conclusion was the highlight. Say it with me: “Mike drop.”

Marlon Brando Kisses Larry King

One of Hollywood’s most recognizable artists, Marlon Brando, was also renowned for rarely doing interviews despite being among the greatest the business has ever seen. However, Brando shocked us all during a particularly memorable live interview at the house of the two-time Oscar winner with Larry King.

The conversation served to promote Songs, his book. The two men sang “Have a Date with an Angel” as they concluded “My Mother Taught Me, ” and then they gave each other a sweet kiss. After shaking hands, they bid each other farewell. It was extremely odd.

“Cheers” Cast Gets Tipsy After the Show’s Finale

There were mixed emotions when Cheers ended after 11 seasons in 1993. After the most recent episode, Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrison, Rhea Pearlman, George Wendt, and John Ratzenberger were among the cast members that Jay Leno conducted a live interview with at the Cheers bar in Boston. Furthermore, Leno could not have been ready for what had happened, as with any live performance.

The cast had begun drinking before they even got to the bar, so even though there were scheduled sketches, they were utterly inebriated when Leno went to interview them. It was extremely uncommon at the time to see celebrities intoxicated on a late-night program. That was somewhat startling, then.

Jerry Lawler Slaps Andy Kaufman

We weren’t sure if the rivalry between actor/wrestler Andy Kaufman and wrestler Jerry Lawler was real or just a stage. That was especially unclear after the two made guest appearances on the show.

After Lawler injured his neck during a match, Kaufman appeared with a neck brace on. He demanded an apology from the other wrestler, but Lawler made fun of him instead. Kaufman was even knocked off his chair by a slap from him. Not only that, but Kaufman also hurled coffee over Letterman’s desk at Lawler during an outburst of verbal abuse. Although we’re still unsure if this was manufactured, it was undoubtedly memorable.

Jimmy Kimmel Impersonates Jay Leno

When NBC revealed that Conan O’Brien would be replacing Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, the world of late-night talk shows was rocked. After Leno declared he would be returning from retirement to host the show once more, Conan’s tenure was terminated.

However, Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t pleased with the news either, and Conan wasn’t the only one to strike out. He hilariously dressed up as Leno and impersonated him for the entire show to express his disgust. He went all out, wigging out, putting on a huge artificial chin, and lisping a little. Why Kimmel was so incensed over NBC’s choice is still a mystery.

Lip Sync Battle with Emma Stone

While there have been many incredible lip sync battles, such as those starring Will Ferrell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Paul Rudd, Emma Stone’s is the one that we can’t stop thinking about.

When Stone lip synced to DJ Khalid’s “All I Do is Win” and Blues Traveler’s “Hook” versus Fallon’s Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and Styx’s “Mr. Roboto,” she nailed it. She tackled Ludacris’ rap section in her epic song “All I Do is Win.” We grew even more in love with the actress after seeing her performances.

Jimmy Kimmel Calls Out James Corden

Kimmel shocked James Corden by playing the game “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” during his appearance on his show. The object of the game is for the guests and hosts to consume something disgusting or respond to a question.

Corden was truly taken aback by the final query. He was asked to identify two of the camera operators present in the room. Though it ought to have been simple, Corden was genuinely unable to respond to the query. Granted, the show most likely employs a large team, but not being able to identify even two of them? Quite embarrassing, don’t you think?

Rihanna Pranks Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel is well-known for his love of practical jokes, particularly April Fool’s Day gags. Pop sensation Rihanna was a big fan of Kimmel’s antics. Jimmy’s wife assisted Rihanna in pulling off an incredible practical joke on Kimmel.

With dollar notes and strobe lights playing, Rihanna delivered him a real wake-up call that he would never forget. The song was called “B—h Better Have My Money.” This was the first of several unexpected visits to the hosts’ bedroom, and he was baffled. Could you picture being awakened by Rihanna?

Jason Sehorn Proposes to Angie Harmon

It’s obvious that actress Angie Harmon was unaware that her boyfriend, New York Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn, was going to pop the question. She made an effort to duck questions from Jay Leno about who she was dating. But she had to have realized something was wrong when the football player entered the stage and the host called him out by name.

Then Sehorn dropped to one knee and asked the big question. She said yes, of course, and her father was present to share in the joy. Everyone like a happy ending, right?

Gordon Ramsay’s Flirty Banter With Sofia Vergara

It’s well known that Gordon Ramsay is a wild card; you never know what will come out of his mouth. However, things rapidly grew awkward and difficult to watch when he arrived on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Sofia Vergara was the other guest.

Everything about his flirtatious banter, from his “only in the bedroom comment” to his “playfully” smacking her behind and sitting on her chair, made her uneasy. We can assume that she wasn’t into it.

Kevin Hart vs. Animal Guest

It might surprise you to learn that Kevin Hart isn’t an animal lover, which added to the entertainment value of the Robert Irwin animal segment on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Hart was unable to move from his seat quickly enough when the first animal was brought out, and he stays safely apart from Fallon’s interactions with the animals for the duration of the episode.

However, when he handles a tarantula, he doesn’t hesitate to molest the host. Despite his fear, Fallon manages to persuade Hart to participate in the falcon trick. We were laughing so hard the entire time.

Whitney Houston’s Performance of “I’m You’re Baby Tonight”

With more than 200 million albums sold globally, Whitney Houston is among the best-selling artists of all time. During her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the host congratulated her on smashing The Beatles’ record with seven straight number-one hits.

As if an interview with Whitney weren’t incredible enough, her rendition of “I’m You’re Baby Tonight” left us speechless.

History of Rap with Justin Timberlake

The friendship between Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake is among the best in the entertainment business. Although the two have done numerous funny routines, their lesson on the history of rap is still my favorite.

The Roots performed every hit live, and the couple seemed to be having the time of their lives as they choreographed each song with singing and dancing motions. They performed Missy Elliot’s “Work It,” Kanye West’s “Gold Digger,” and Souja Boy’s “Tell’em – Crank That.” The two continued to do the drawing five more times since they were having so much fun!

Craig Ferguson Becomes a U.S. Citizen

Born in Glasgow Jokes aside, Craig Ferguson passed with flying colors as he demonstrated exactly what it means to become a citizen of the United States. He received a perfect score! Not a single question escaped his grasp. We’re not sure if we would have passed, to be honest.

The comedian’s quick wit and flexibility were crucial in this situation. When we listened to him respond to the questions, we laughed a lot. He exudes pride in being an American.

Ew! with Channing Tatum

Fallon invited a number of guests for this funny routine, but Channing Tatum stands out as one of the most memorable. He plays Susie flawlessly, maintaining character throughout the entire scene. He even gave us a taste of his Magic Mike days as he performed some jaw-dropping dancing skills to a tune, leaving us wanting more.

Tatum’s Susie isn’t a fan of the movie, but Fallon’s Sara is. The chemistry between Fallon and Tatum was all we could think about.

Steven Colbert’s Tolkien Parody

It’s likely that you were unaware of Stephen Colbert’s brief appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The host traveled to New Zealand and met with filmmaker Peter Jackson in one of his sketches, hoping to secure a spinoff series for his character Laketown Spy.

The finest part is a promo clip where Jackson joins him as his sidekick and keeps making references to other series like Harry Potter. The director seems dissatisfied with the pitch. Even Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen from The Lord of the Rings made brief appearances. You can still enjoy this passage even if you’re not a huge fan of LOTR.

Will Ferrell and Chad Smith Drum-Off

Some celebrities, like Amy Adams and Isla Fisher and Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel, have such striking similarities that it can be difficult to tell them apart. However, there is an especially striking likeness between Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

They both attended Fallon’s show, and they both wore identical outfits. We had trouble distinguishing between the two. In an epic drum-off to determine who was the better drummer, the actor and drummer took the stage. Smith was obviously a superior drummer, but Ferrell’s abilities were still impressive.

Jennifer Garner Gets Outsmarted

Conan discussed the occasion when she sneaked into a room with Jennifer Garner, America’s love, during an interview. Conan, you went to Harvard, so you should know that sneaky isn’t a word. The actress instantly corrected him, calling him “sneaked.”

However, “snuck” is a real word, and Conan, being the class act that he is, continued with the interview. A little later, Conan took advantage of her ignorance by bringing up a dictionary from beneath his desk and discovering the definition of “snuck.” He took care to massage it in a little. It was quite uncomfortable to watch the entire thing.

Farrah Fawcett Spaces Out

Watching late-night interviews may sometimes leave us completely perplexed, and Farrah Fawcett of Charlie’s Angels is one such interview.

Even David Letterman struggled to keep up with the late actress when she presented a series of nonsensical stories. We don’t know if she was acting like the foolish blonde or if she was under the influence. She was on the show, after all, to publicize a photo session for Playboy magazine. Regardless of her goals, we’d say the appearance was a success because everyone was talking about the conversation.

Johnny Carson’s Last TV Appearance

When a late-night host retires and someone needs to take over, it’s usually a major hassle, but Johnny Carson’s departure from The Tonight Show was likely the largest late-night farewell.

Carson made his final TV appearance on David Letterman’s show, but Jay Leno was hired to take over Carson’s role. Even the legendary host was allowed to sit in Letterman’s host chair. As Carson took a seat, the audience erupted in applause. The crowd paused to applaud, and Carson, like a real legend, shook his head and left the stage. It’s still a touch warm, Letterman said as he leaned back in his chair to end the segment. I wish I could absorb a bit of that. Whoa.

Crispin Glover Kicks David Letterman

The actor Crispin Glover had a strange interview with David Letterman. Glover appeared wearing glasses, platform shoes, and a wig. He was acting strange, reading passages from the newspaper about himself, and talking nonsensically.

Letterman accepted the show until the performer got up and kicked him a few inches away from his face. At that point, the host gave up and declared that he was going to “check on the top ten” before leaving the stage. We were glued to the TV during the trainwreck of an interview.

Bradley Cooper and Jimmy Fallon Can’t Stop Laughing

We always find it hilarious when talk show hosts struggle to remain composed, and that’s precisely what happened in what was supposed to be a fairly standard interview with Bradley Cooper—one that was devoid of any skit, game, or performance.

The presenter and Cooper wore football visors with wigs attached, and they couldn’t stop giggling at how ludicrous they looked. The actor appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss his most recent performance in the Broadway production of The Elephant Man. Fallon even ends up on the ground at one point, and Cooper had to assist him up. The interview continued to veer off course even after they removed the visors.

Seth Meyers’ Birthing Story

Talk show hosts’ life may occasionally be hilarious, and Seth Meyers’ account of his wife having to give birth in a lobby had us in stitches.

We owe the story to Meyers’ wife, who had to give birth to their kid on the lobby floor of their building. The host related his one-minute chat with 911, during which he said something like, “We’re going to have a baby, we’re having a baby, we had a baby.” Is that even possible to imagine? Given that his son Axel entertained from the moment he was born, it appears that Seth Meyers may not be the only funny guy in the family.

Kanye West Apologizes for MTV Video Music Awards

Who can forget the 2009 Video Music Awards, when Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female Video, and Kanye West snatched the microphone away from her? It was uncomfortable. You might not be aware that the rapper apologized to the singer on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Prior to his scheduled performance alongside Rihanna, Kanye apologized and called his actions “rude” in an unplanned interview. Leno discussed how his late mother would have felt about the circumstance, not holding back in any kind of way. Kanye, who was close to his mother, was struck deeply by the question and began crying.

Crosswalk the Musical “Frozen”’

On The Late Late Show with James Corden, we’ve seen some fantastic Crosswalk the Musical bits with Grease, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Frozen is still one of our all-time favorites.

In the scene, songs were being sung by Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff at a busy Los Angeles intersection as the traffic lights went red. Menzel was forced to portray Sven the reindeer when Corden chose to play Elsa. Don’t worry, Menzel won a sing-off to regain her job as Elsa. Even costumes were present!

Bill Murray Dresses Up as Liberace

David Letterman welcomed back Bill Murray, a frequent visitor, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bill Murray’s debut appearance on the Late Show. Murray was used to making dramatic entrances; he had appeared out of a cake, dressed like a 1700s gentleman, and even shown up in full football regalia to celebrate the New York Giants’ triumph.

This time, Murray made one of the greatest stage entrances in history as Liberace. The actor went all out when he arrived in a white Rolls-Royce, carrying a little puppy and dressed in furs and a cape.

Tattoo Roulette with One Direction

One Direction frequently appeared on James Corden’s show; their Carpool Karaoke and Tattoo Roulette segments were the highlights. Our preference has to be the latter. There are five players and five boxes in this rather simple game. One of the boxes is tattooed, while the other four are secure boxes.

Since Niall Horan was the only member not wearing ink at the moment, tensions were high. Who did end up getting a tattoo, then? Harry Styles ultimately decided to get the “Late Late” tattoo. But among his companions, it was hardly noticeable.

Stephen Colbert Gets Touchy With Kristen Stewart

Technology can occasionally cause issues and make interviews uncomfortable. That is exactly what transpired during Stephen Colbert’s discussion with Kristen Stewart. Before there was a microphone problem that was hitting her necklace and generating audio problems, everything appeared to be going according to plan.

Colbert adjusted her necklace, bringing the microphone a little too close to her chest, rather than just notifying her about the problem. She eventually just removed the jewelry, obviously uncomfortable. But the harm had already been done.

Abel Ferrara Acts Under the Influence

Late-night guests don’t usually arrive sober, and director of Bad Lieutenant Abel Ferrara was probably one of those guests. He was accused of trying to flee the studio, coming up intoxicated, and refusing to go on stage.

The director slurred his words the entire time, and Conan even suggested that viewers watch the interview with subtitles in order to understand it. Ferrara was the worst guest Conan had ever had on his show, he remarked later.

David Letterman Insults Paris Hilton

After being freed from prison, Paris Hilton appeared on David Letterman’s Late Show, but the host wasn’t overly concerned about it. He brought up Paris’s incarceration shortly after she took the stage, referring to it as her “slammer” period. Paris continued to make jokes despite clearly not wanting to talk about it.

She attempted to hide her frustration, and at one point she even exclaimed, “You’re hurting my feelings, which makes me sad that I came.” That pretty much covers everything.

Jimmy Interviews “Khaleesi”

It’s always a wonderful joke when one of Jimmy Fallon’s fellow SNL alumni appears on his show. The appearance of Kristen Wiig as Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi was among the greatest. When Wig enters the scene as a character, she typically has no prior knowledge of them.

The comedian’s responses to Fallon’s questions were utterly incorrect, indicating that she had never watched Game of Thrones. Wiig even claimed to cast spells for amusement. The interview was hilarious to watch since they both couldn’t stop laughing, even though nothing about it was true.

Harrison Ford Pierces Jimmy Fallon’s Ear

When Harrison Ford appeared, Jimmy Fallon allowed the Star Wars star to pierce his ear on television. Fallon will do practically anything to create a fantastic show. Before Ford even got Fallon’s ear ready for the piercing, he took a shot. We were wriggling during the sketch, watching as Ford played around and Fallon perspired and trembled.

Fallon eventually gets an ear piercing and sports a feathery hanging earring. By the time the episode ends, both of them are wearing matching earrings.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Crush on Seth

Jennifer Lawrence apparently had a crush on Seth Meyers during her week-long stay at Saturday Night Live and was hoping he would ask her out. She devised a scheme to ask him out after it didn’t work out. However, her hopes were dashed when she learned that he was engaged from the wardrobe lady. awkward.

Lawrence seems uneasy even when retelling the event, but Meyers handles it like a pro, and the two end up laughing about it all—and we laughed too!

Tom Holland Describes Dancing for Madonna

Tom Holland disclosed his awful incident on The Graham Norton Show. Even superstars have uncomfortable moments. Holland described being introduced to Madonna at an Oscars after-party by an old acquaintance who had told the pop icon about his dancing prowess. She wasn’t impressed when he tried to show her some of his moves after that. How boring do you think Spider-Man must have felt?

The most endearing part was when he remembered his younger brother’s response to the tale, asking, “Who’s Madonna?” The other visitors were laughing uncontrollably.
