Ball over Beer
“What can be worse than not catching the ball? Well, I’m glad you asked.” This photo is tragic, comic and dramatic all at once. There’s so many stories going on in this single frame, it almost seems like it’s a renaissance painting!
This is actually one of baseball’s most famous photographs, taken in Chicago during the 1959 World Series. The player getting doused with beer is the Chicago White Sox’s Al Smith – and the guy dropping the beer to catch the ball is a motor oil company executive by the name of Melvin Piehl.
